Artist’s Statement:
This series of mixed media work entitled “Behind Closed Doors: See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil” explores the journey through an experience of social injustice, including the demoralizing consequences of realizing that justice is often not possible in the end. The works capture the innocence of a child, the point at which it is stolen, and the need for normalcy that we, as adults, grasp for in the wake of abhorrent and life changing events. The bright and vibrant colour palette is juxtaposed to the dark and very real subject matter. The boldness of the pieces seek to capture a child-like state of mind. The viewer will become uncomfortable gazing at the body of work and yet also be so captivated that it will be difficult to turn away.
Through the works in this exhibition, the artist seeks to give voice to victims of all forms of social injustice. Through this visual experience, she offers growth in learning and hope for the future.
